Article summary

The Azure Relay Service facilitates your hybrid applications by enabling you to securely expose services that reside within a corporate enterprise network to the public cloud, without having to open a firewall connection or require intrusive changes to a corporate network infrastructure. The previously named Service Bus Relay service is now called WCF Relay. You can continue to use this service as usual. The Hybrid Connections feature is an updated version of a service that's been transplanted from Azure BizTalk Services.WCF Relay and Hybrid Connections both continue to be supported.

Hybrid Cloud and On-Premise Connectivity

  1. Relay facilitates secure connectivity without the requirement of an external VPN
  2. Data can reside anywhere in any of the on-premise data centers
  3. Network load balancing is done in round-robin fashion without the requirement of an external appliance.
  4. Supports both one-way and duplex communications

Connect on-premises applications via the cloud

Azure Relay addresses the technical challenge of communication between on-premise service and the external application which does not reside on the same premise or firewall. It allows on-premise service to expose a public endpoint. External applications which are not in the same premise or firewall can access the on-premise service using these endpoints.

High Availability for On-Premise Services

Azure Relay allows for registering multiple listeners to a single public relay endpoint. This provides a framework for both performance and availability without complex application logic or a costly networking appliance.

Serverless360 Capabilities

  1. The first step in getting started with Relays in Serverless360 is to associate a Relay namespace, this namespace provides a container to manage Relay resources within your application. Follow this image to associate Relay namespace with Serverless360.

  1. Import Azure Service Bus Relays - Let's consider a scenario, Northwind corporation has created and configured the settings for a Relay in their test environment and wants to replicate the same in the development environment, in this scenario, the only option is to recreate the Relay with the same settings either in the Azure portal or in Service Bus Explorer. Obviously, this is a time-consuming process, Serverless360 provides a simple solution by allowing the users to import the Relays between namespace to make process easy.

  1. Monitoring - When a Azure Relay is included in a Composite Application, you can enable a end point monitor to trigger alerts to the configured notification channel(s) by comparing the current value against the expected value. You can read extensive documentation on Monitoring here.
  2. Additionally, you can view the Azure Relay properties, shared access policy and copy the Relay URL.
